Womanity Award (4th round) to prevent Domestic Violence against Women and Girls

First launched in 2014, the Womanity Award works to surface innovative solutions to prevent violence against women and girls (VAWG) from around the world. It focuses on the power of collaboration to address the root cause of VAWG.

Approximately every two years, we select a pair of organisations in the Global South who then work together for three years. One of these is the Innovation Partner (IP) who has an innovative evidence based approach to prevent violence against women and girls. They support them to help them increase their reach by adapting their programme in partnership with another organisation.

The other organisation is the Scale-Up Partner (SP) who receives support adapt and deliver the tried-and-tested innovation in their own location. Both organisations share knowledge and learn from each other through a partnership based upon balanced power and mutual respect.

They have launched three rounds of the Womanity Award to date. Each of them has focused on a different theme related to violence against women and girls. These have included engaging men and boys, online violence and women’s safety in public spaces.

Goals

  • Scale-up innovation through adaptation’, a model specifically designed to leverage strong, pre-existing ideas to end VAWG, rather than spend time and resources reinventing the wheel.
  • Act as a catalyst and accelerate the dissemination of learning, of promising practices and of impactful models addressing VAWG across different geographies and help to build transnational collaborations.
  • Strengthen the institutional capacity of both partner organisations and exchange knowledge with Womanity, the partner organisations and the field.

Eligibility Criteria

  • You must be based in the Global South. The Innovation Partner and Scale-Up Partner should be from different countries.
  • You must be a legal, registered organisation.
  • The Innovation and Scale-Up Partners must have a partnership agreed in principle to adapt a programme focused on the prevention of domestic violence against women and girls in the country where Scale-Up Partner is based.
  • You must be able to communicate in English for both the selection process and implementation if selected. (They recognise that this may limit many organizations from taking part in the process, but unfortunately, they don’t have the structure to select and to manage projects in different languages for the time being)
  • A desirable but not mandatory criteria is to have a diverse board and senior leadership with equal/fair representation of women.

Funding

Adaptation Planning Fund

  • Each pair of finalists is granted with CHF 5,000 to cover the time dedicated to plan and additional CHF 2,500 to cover field visits to the country where the programme will be adapted (this will depend on restrictions related to the Covid-19 pandemic).

Womanity Award Fund

  • The awarded pair of organisations will receive the Womanity Award Fund of CHF 320,000 over three years to be shared between them. These funds include: Funds for Adaptation – CHF 240,000 is dedicated to the adaptation of the innovative programme to prevent violence against women and girls in the chosen country. This includes funds for Amplifying Voices.
  • Funds for Institutional Strengthening – CHF 60,000 to cover the costs of experts the partners will commission to work on their organisational development. Funds for Self-Care – CHF 20,000 be used as the partners wish on their self-care needs during the three-year programme.

Womanity Award Seed Fund

  • Each of the two pairs of finalists not awarded will receive the Womanity Award Seed Fund of CHF 30,000. This will enable them to pilot their adaptation plan, to further develop it or to give the partners some support until they are able to secure funding from other donors to implement their plan.
